چکیده

Objective: This article reviews the electroencephalography (EEG) literature in relation to attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD). Methods: The review briefly outlines the history of the disorder, focusing on the changing diagnostic systems which both reflect and constrain research into AD/HD. Both qualitative and quantitative EEG studies are examined, and their results are discussed in relation to various models of AD/HD. Implications of these data for future research and development in AD/HD are considered. Results: In terms of resting EEG, elevated relative theta power, and reduced relative alpha and beta, together with elevated theta/alpha and theta/beta ratios, are most reliably associated with AD/HD. Theta/alpha and theta/beta ratios also discriminate diagnostic subgroups of AD/HD. Recent studies of EEG heterogeneity in this disorder indicate the existence of different profiles of cortical anomalies which may cut across diagnostic types. Conclusions: The research to date has identified a substantial number of EEG correlates of AD/HD which hold promise for improving our understanding of the brain dysfunction(s) underlying the disorder. Further work in this field may benefit from a broader conceptual approach, integrating EEG and other measures of brain function. Author

Comparison of a parent-rated DSM-IV measure of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and quantitative EEG parameters in an outpatient sample of children.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was investigated using the parent-as-respondent, 200-item, Coolidge Personality and Neuropsychology Inventory (CPNI) and a quantitative electroencephalograph (QEEG). Parents of 183 children (mean age = 12.2 years) brought to an outpatient private clinic for behavioral and/or emotional problems completed the CPNI including the 18-item DSM-IV-based ...

ADHD QEEG Diagnosis

Results from this study indicated that individuals with ADHD could be reliably distinguished from non-ADHD individuals by QEEG scan results of the prefrontal cortical areas. Approximately 90% of individuals who had been carefully diagnosed with ADHD using standard diagnosed procedures showed a pattern of under activity in these areas (referred to as “cortical slowing”). In contrast, 94% of a co...

Quantitative Electroencephalography Reflects Inattention, Visual Error Responses, and Reaction Times in Male Patients with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

OBJECTIVE Quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) has been increasingly used to evaluate patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between qEEG data and symptom severity in patients with ADHD. METHODS Fifteen patients with ADHD and 20 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. Electroencephalography was assessed in the re...

Analysis of independent components of cognitive event related potentials in a group of ADHD adults.

In the last decade, many studies have tried to define the neural correlates of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The main aim of this study is the comparison of the ERPs independent components in the four QEEG subtypes in a group of ADHD adults as a basis for defining the corresponding endophenotypes among ADHD population. Sixty-seven adults diagnosed as ADHD according to the DSM...

Assessing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder via quantitative electroencephalography: an initial validation study.

Spectral analysis of the electrophysiological output at a single, midline prefrontal location (the vertex) was conducted in 482 individuals, ages 6-30 years old, to test the hypothesis that cortical slowing in the prefrontal region can serve as a basis for differentiating patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) from nonclinical control groups. Participants were classified ...

The development of a quantitative electroencephalographic scanning process for attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder: reliability and validity studies.

The development of a quantitative electroencephalographic (QEEG)-based procedure for use in the assessment of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was examined through a series of studies investigating test reliability and validation issues. This process, involving a spectral analysis of the electrophysiological power output from a single, midline, central location (the vertex), was ...
